It is precisely this need that inspired the idea of our
philosophy:
Create a “Democratic Design” that can allow everyone to have beautiful objects in the home.
The vision of the Istituto Italiano Design (IID) is clear: to give young people the chance to design “From the Spoon to the City”, (“Dal Cucchiaio Alla Città”) as stated in the famous title of the book by Lidia Arduino.
A good design is not only beautiful but also useful and functional.
Everything we use, touch and wear (now also what we eat!) comes from a careful reflection focused on aesthetics and good taste.
Until a few years ago this concept was not fully understood; in fact, many were not aware of the nuances and importance of this discipline.
- PASSION: If this is missing, then there is nothing thought and nothing created. Passion is what shakes up our life to reach extraordinary goals.
- CURIOSITY: This allows you to develop a careful and critical look at everything around you. Curiosity leads you to deepen what you are passionate about in a way that makes you forget about the time and space in which you work because you never get tired!
- THE COURAGE OF “WRONG”: this is what we always try to convey to our students to eradicate the erroneous culture that states that those who make mistakes are failures. It’s not true!
Without mistakes, certainties are not strengthened, and there is no growth because the effort to overcome one’s abilities and not be satisfied is the most difficult choice, but it is also the most gratifying.

This is precisely the purpose of the Istituto Italiano Design:
Allowing young people to express their creativity through the transmission of knowledge and logic that are the basis of good design.
“Put on Wings” (“mettere le ali”) on all future Designers so that they can use and express the knowledge learned in the best way to build a future full of satisfaction and beautiful things to see!
For more than 20 years, the Istituto Italiano Design is among the best university-level institutions providing training in the field of design, in all its forms.
RESEARCH, TECHNOLOGY, AND INNOVATION: these are our strengths for a highly qualifying didactic proposal!
Theory and practice work in synergy by combining theoretical lessons with exercises, workshops, and laboratories, up to participation in competitions and sector initiatives.
Let’s step back and review the history of the Istituto Italiano Design.
The idea of founding the school originated in the 1990s from a passion for Design.
The Historic Center of Perugia has always hosted our Institute:
The first IID was located on Via Oberdan for only five years on a pulsating pedestrian street in the heart of Perugia.
IID later transferred to Via Canapina for a little over 11 years, always adjacent to the Historic Center.
Finally, for the last five years, we have returned to the heart of Perugia on Via Alessi, in the prestigious Palazzo Ranieri di Sorbello.

Our collaborations have gradually extended outward from the local territory to the national level, especially in the Design sector.
Subsequently, contacts and collaborations are now linked with prominent foreign companies in emerging countries and most recently in Arab countries.

Our goal is to develop this philosophy with our students. How? By making life better and more beautiful to live because surely the quality of the experience improves the learning environment and offers the student a more pleasant lifestyle, while far from the family.
Our students have the opportunity to take advantage of deals with different local entities: gyms, swimming pools, clubs, clothing stores, pizzerias, stationery stores, and jewelers.
We have an agreement with an agency that deals with rentals, especially in the Historic Center that we have chosen because the proximity to the Istituto Italiano Design allows students to optimize their time by facilitating them logistically, making their experience similar to a university campus.
